Concern Over Cap On Benefits

Monday, November 21st, 2011

Anticipating a blow to low-income families, local charities have voiced their disapproval of government plans to cap family benefits.

With inflation rates expected to rise to 5.2 percent this year, reports reveal talk of keeping benefits at the current year’s rate of 4.5 percent. Explaining that such an act would have devastating effects on struggling families, Helen Dent, Family Action’s chief executive, noted that already existing inflation prices on fuel and food, as well as cuts in benefits and services, have families at a breaking point already.

This new decision by Chancellor George Osborne to ignore the rise in inflation and cap the benefits will only add to the hardships these families are already seeing.

"Should a family have to choose between heating their homes or feeding their children?" Is the question being asked of a public that had high hopes of the government’s family-friendly policies.

Four out of ten families with very young children are at a point of no return, reveals many charity organisations. Such revelations from charities like Home-Start UK, states that many parents feel that any more hits will send them over the edge. The Chancellor’s statement, if put into effect, will be one direct hit on the welfare of their children.

Kay Bews with Home-Start UK, realises that capping benefits will only add more difficulty to a high percentage of families that come to them for support. Home-Start, a non-profit charity funded by philanthropic foundations and partnerships, helps those that come to them suffering from isolation, disability and bereavement issues. They believe their experience in helping families apply for benefits gives a clear picture that these families are truly at a disadvantage already.

There was no comment from the office of Chancellor Osborne, who is accused of setting aside the government’s standard of family-friendly treatment by breaking the link that inflation rates have on benefits.

Simon Cowell Donates £20k to Charity

Sunday, November 20th, 2011

The Rhythmix charity, based out of Brighton who assist disabled and vulnerable youths through the use of music and music-based programs, has found itself on the receiving end of a generous donation made by music mogul Simon Cowell.

Cowell is a mainstay figure throughout both the UK and the music and entertainment scene worldwide, which explains the significance of Cowell making a donation to a music based charity.

The donation, reported to be to the tune of £20k, will go a long way in helping the organisation continue to fulfil its goals of helping youth throughout the Brighton and surrounding areas. The series of events which led to the donation, however, had been rooted in controversy.

The UK show, the X Factor, featured a rising performance group which had used the name Rhythmix while performing on the show. Organisers’ of the charity balked at the lack of acknowledgement of the actual charity, and legal teams between the X Factor and the charity hammered out a deal to reimburse the organization.

Cowell took one step further, suitable for his widespread presence throughout the UK, and personally agreed to make the donation in his own name to the charity; in lieu of the show writing the check. The funds will also help Rhythmix battle against the Education Secretary for the UK, which is planning on reducing music education funding; thus prompting Rhythmix to lobby against such measures.

Though the terms of the settlement have not been disclosed, it is reported that the figure of £20k is the base amount, as that is the amount required to cover the legal fees associated with the lawsuit and claim associated with protecting the trademarked name.

In addition, the group which performed on the X Factor has since been renamed to accommodate the charity and their claims; the group is now referred to as Little Mix.

Mentoring Can Help Your Business

Sunday, November 20th, 2011

Everyone needs to have a mentor; someone that’s a combination of a teacher, friend and sounding board all in one.

Mentors are used in a variety of situations, but in business they help you stay focused on your goals, keep your details straight and perhaps most important of all they can help put you in contact with a bigger circle of people that you may need to talk to.

Because as many will find when it comes to business success, a lot of it is meeting the right people at the right time and making just the right connection.

A business mentor provides you a good deal of necessary help, even if you don’t think of it as help at the time. For instance, a mentor gives you feedback on your ideas, which can help you find problems you missed or increase your confidence when you have a really good idea.

Often a mentor will work with you to get your ideas out of the realm of idle thought and help you turn them into action.

Your mentor also provides experience you may lack in necessary fields. For instance, your mentor might have had a career in banking and as such will know the best steps for you to take to get your business idea successfully financed.

Alternatively your mentor might have been in advertising, and thus knows all the little tricks of the trade when it comes to getting your business name out there and your product well known.

There are also benefits of becoming a mentor, even if you have one of your own. You can share your experiences and ideas, helping others achieve the same success you have. And of course you can make those critical connections with people that have big plans, big ideas and who may one day be powerful business associates in their own right.
